2022 SEC Football Standings

This data is constructed from the best available information as provided by Larry Lester, Wayne Stivers and Dick Clark of the Negro Leagues Researchers and Authors Group. It contains data culled from newspaper boxscores, covering league sanctioned games from 1920 to 1948, which was produced for a study sponsored by Major League Baseball and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. As new credible information is continually unearthed, these numbers will continue to change. All images are property the copyright holder and are displayed here for informational purposes only. Barry Bonds holds the Major League Baseball home run record with 762. The only other players to have hit 700 or more are Babe Ruth with 714 and Albert Pujols with 703.

That said, the leader in home runs while actually playing right field isn’t Hammerin' Hank or the Great Bambino, but rather Sammy Sosa with 538. Aaron had 520 homers as a right fielder, 68 as a left fielder, 64 as a center fielder, 61 as a first baseman, 22 as a DH, six as a second baseman and three as a pinch-hitter. Bonds isn’t just the home run leader among left fielders, he’s the leader among all players, period.

Player Statistics

Kent, Robinson Canó and Rogers Hornsby are the only three players to hit 300-plus homers while playing at least two-thirds of their games at second base. Kent leads the way with 377, having recorded 20 or more 12 times. He earned National League MVP honors after hitting .334 with 33 homers, 125 RBIs and a 1.021 OPS in 2000.

Furniss and Cresse were part of the famous Geauxrilla Ball era at LSU. Both were members of the 1997 CWS champion Tigers team that slugged 188 home runs that season — still an NCAA record — including at least one Tiger bomb in every one of the 70 games they played. Furniss finished his career as one of college baseball’s all-time greats, ending as the SEC's all-time leader in home runs, RBI and hits, the latter finally broken in 2019 by Mississippi State’s Jake Mangum. Cresse finished his career two behind Furniss on the SEC career home run list. Two players on the list stand out as big "what ifs." BYU’s Cory Snyder and Virginia Tech’s George Canale both slugged 0.42 home runs per game, tied for second behind Inky’s 0.47. It makes you wonder just how many they could have hit had either come close to the 213 games Incaviglia played.

Of the three hitters in MLB history with more than 700 home runs, two -- Aaron and Ruth -- primarily played right field. Ruth was the all-time home run king from 1920 until '74, when Aaron passed him with his 715th career homer. Aaron ended up with 755 long balls and held the career record until Bonds surpassed his total in 2007.

About the Register Data

A player is considered inactive if he has announced his retirement or has not played for a full season. A look at Tennessee's entire 2023 baseball schedule for SEC and nonconference games. These are the college football programs with the most College Football Playoff wins and appearances since the format began in 2014.

Pujols, the only positional home run leader who is currently active, has compiled 697 homers over 22 seasons in the Majors. A three-time MVP Award winner, Pujols became the ninth member of the 600 home run club in 2017 when he swatted a grand slam off Ervin Santana. However, Pujols actually ranks second when it comes to home runs hit as a first baseman , trailing Mark McGwire . Pujols has crushed 115 homers as a DH, 64 as a left fielder, 24 as a third baseman, seven as a pinch-hitter and six as a right fielder. Piazza had nine career seasons with at least 30 home runs, more than double the total of any other catcher, and his personal best was 40, which he accomplished twice (1997, '99). Overall, the Hall of Fame backstop crushed 427 career homers in 16 seasons, with 396 of his long balls coming while he was playing the catcher position.

Neither Snyder nor Canale hit less than 21 home runs in their three years of college baseball, with Canale posting a career-high of 29 and Snyder slamming 27 as his best mark. Note that our records are missing thousands of players who played in the Negro Leagues for minor league teams, independent teams, barnstorming teams or even Negro major league teams. We will bring their records to light as soon as suitable records are available for those players.

Regular season play will conclude May 21 ahead of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. Sunday’s contest concluded Tennessee’s second Southeastern Conference series of the 2022 season. Historically, different positions have come with different power expectations. This is evident when looking at the all-time home run leaders at each spot on the diamond. We have tools and resources that can help you use sports data.

As a matter of policy, Sports Reference only reports the results of games as played on the field. Following Tennessee’s second Southeastern Conference series of the 2022 season, Vols Wire looks at UT’s home run leaders. Every Tennessee player to hit a home run this season are listed below.
